President of Chicago Map Society on Chicago Etymology

Image
Hi Bob, I'm starting this new blog for my new website, EarliestChicagoMaps.com .  I'm kicking it off with open emails to you and Carl Masthay, author of the Indian-to-French dictionary . In consideration of you being the President of the Chicago Map Society, and the author of the lavishly appointed Chicago in Maps , if you would be so kind -- please cast some light on your, or the CMS's thinking, about: 1. What is the conclusion, yours and/or that of the Chicago Map Society on the etymology/origin of the Chicago-word? 2. What is the first map with the Chicago word on it. Regards, Carl

Masthay Chicago Etymology: Discussion Kick-Off

Image
Open email to Carl Masthay (Author of the Kaskaskia Illinois-to-French Dictionary ): Hi Carl For purposes of a future piece I want to publish, do you "clearly" agree that John Swenson is correct about the Chicago-word etymology?, and that his Wikipedia information under "Chicago," is right? I'm also sending the same query to Robert Holland, President of the Chicago Map Society. Regards, Carl

Welcome

In consideration of you being the President of the Chicago Map Society, and the author of the lavishly appointed Chicago in Maps , if you would be so kind -- please cast some light on this generally murky area with your, and/or, the CMS's, mature thinking, about: 1. What is the conclusion, yours and/or that of the Chicago Map Society, on the etymology/origin of the Chicago-word? 2. What is the first map with the Chicago word on it? Regards,  Carl
